Mario’s approach to the medium of digital painting and illustration results in this unique form of photo-realism. He has developed a diverse range of images from the playful to the most profound, from what is real to the surreal. The digital photographic process initially captures and preserves all the essential information within the image. Known as CAMERA RAW, it is his basic paint pigment where he brings out the essence within to transform and depict life to an illustrated mystical experience. This is the basis for his form of expressionism.
Mario graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from The University of the Philippines. He took Post-Graduate courses at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he studied Illustration and Design under Milton Glaser, and Printmaking at the Manhattan branch of Pratt Institute.
His career in commercial art started at McCann-Erickson Intl. A New Yorker for most of his life, he was first employed by Doyle Dane Bernbach in their Promotion Plus subsidiary. A few years later, he moved on from consumer to pharmaceutical advertising, first at Sudler & Hennessey (Young & Rubicam), then to Dorritie, Lyons & Nickel (LLNS-Omnicom). It was in these years that his illustration skills were further developed through the hands-on privilege to actually create and execute most of his concepts and designs himself to his own exact expectations. At the same time he also had the opportunity to do freelance illustration and design projects for McGraw-Hill, Time/Life Books, Scholastics and other publications. He had been a recipient of numerous Rx Club, Art Directors’ Club of NY and the Society of Illustrators NY awards. His endeavors have taken him from Boardman, Designer, Illustrator, Art Director then eventually to VP Associate Creative Director. But what he found most rewarding in those corporate years was that he discovered a whole new realm in Digital Painting and Illustration complimented by his mastery of Photoshop, Painter and Illustrator.
Mario and his family relocated to Sarasota, FL— a place he deems conducive to providing that inspiring atmosphere and privacy that is essential for creative expression. He is constantly experimenting with unconventional digital executions. “… whether it be the expression of painting itself, pure and obvious in realistic images or the expression of paintings’ illusionistic possibilities, demystifying, aestheticized and unutterable…” it is always a work of self–fascination that guides his passion—a narcissistic pictorial reflection.
